The Colgate men's lacrosse team held a 4-2 lead in the first quarter of its NCAA quarterfinals match with Duke today. They Duke ran of 13 unanswered goals on its way to a 17-6 win in Philadelphia. Duke next plays Maryland in the semis.

Baum Up for Top Lacrosse Award

Colgate men's lacrosse junior Peter Baum is one of the five men's finalists for the 2012 Tewaaraton Award, the preeminent lacrosse award, annually honoring the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States. Presentation of the award will take place May 31 at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C.

Colgate senior Will Zabel was named to the Golf Academic All-Patriot League Team. The awards are voted on by the Patriot League's golf sports information directors. To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport.

Junior Peter Baum scored five times and four other Raiders added two goals apiece as the No. 12/14 Colgate men's lacrosse team beat Lafayette 18-7 this afternoon at Andy Kerr Stadium. The win clinched the Raiders a spot in the Patriot League Tournament, and the 11-goal margin was the largest victory for Colgate since beating Holy Cross 22-9 in 2009.

The Colgate men's lacrosse team's offense came alive once again on Tuesday afternoon as the team beat Hobart 18-8 at home this afternoon in their fourth win of the season. This was the most goals the Raiders have scored against Hobart since the teams first met in 1921. This was also their second straight win by 10 goals, having defeated Robert Morris 24-14 last weekend.

Colgate men's lacrosse head coach Mike Murphy has announced the addition of Matt Abbott to the coaching staff as a volunteer assistant coach. Matt, who played four years at Syracuse University, currently plays Major League Lacrosse with the Chesapeake Bayhawks. His brother Mike is also on the Colgate staff.

The award is given to a coach who has demonstrated the ability to motivate, to instill discipline, to help build character and perseverance, to display resourcefulness and to be adept at teaching the fundamentals of their sport. They will receive their award at the university convocation ceremony.
