Murphy Commencement Speaker

Mark H. Murphy, president and CEO of the Green Bay Packers and former football captain and athletics director at Colgate University, is the keynote speaker at this year's commencement Sunday, May 20, in Sanford Field House. Murphy played eight seasons with the Washington Redskins, and is believed to be the first person to earn a Super Bowl ring as a player (XVII, 1982) and as a team chief executive (XLV, 2010).

Former Colgate Professor Honored

Nigel Young, who was a professor and director of the Peace Studies Program at Colgate from 1984 to 2004, recently received the Dayton Literary Peace Prize for his four-volume Oxford International Encyclopedia of Peace: Global Conflict, Transformation, and Nonviolent Change. Young now lives in Yorkshire, England.

Colgate's Carlsmith Dies

Kevin M. Carlsmith, a Colgate professor and researcher who battled cancer for the past three years, died Nov. 19 in his boyhood home in California. He was 44. Carlsmith, an associate professor of psychology, arrived at Colgate in 2003.

Andy Rooney, the Colgate grad who delivered his last essay on "60 Minutes" three weeks ago, was in the hospital Tuesday after developing serious complications following surgery. CBS said the 92-year-old writer's condition was stable and, at the request of his family, offered no other information about his medical problems or where he was hospitalized.

The university celebrates the inauguration starting Friday with symposia and a concert in addition to the ceremobies Sunday. Exploring Our Sense of Place will be the theme of the weekend, and for many events and programs in the coming year. In addition to remarks by President Herbst, the ceremony will include remarks by special guest Gregory J.B. “Greg” Mills, director of the Brenthurst Foundation in Johannesburg, South Africa. The ceremony will also be streamed live on the Internet.

Numerous heavily-armed State Police officers and the Madison County K-9 unit are among dozens of law enforcement officers on the scene of what appears to be a standoff on the Colgate campus. Rte. 12B at Kendrick Street is blocked off. A Colgate official on the scene would only say it was "an emergency.". The incident began about 12:30 p.m.
