Village, Colgate Remain Mum on Officer's DWI Accident

Sat, May 08, 2010

Not much is being said about the DWI crash of a man who is a Hamilton cop and Colgate Campus Safety officer.

Not much is being said by the village or Colgate in response to questions about the DWI accident last week by a Brookfield man who serves as both a Hamilton police officer and campus safety officer.

Officials of both say they are awaiting the outcome of the State Police investigation of an accident on Hamilton Road last Friday involving 38-year-old Dan Furman, the Brookfield man who works for the village and Colgte. The State Police are investigating the accident that resulted in Furman being charged with DWI, leaving the scene of a property damage accident and other violations.

Colgate spokesmen said the university does not comment on personnel issues, but the Syracuse Post-Standard has reported Furman has been suspended.

Hamilton Police Officer in Charge Gary Mlasgar Thursday said Furman has been suspended and removed from the active duty roster.

Responding to an email, Mayor Sue McVaugh wrote, "No comment at this time."

Radio Free Hamilton is trying to piece together the details of what occurred before and after the accident.
