Upstate Institute Sponsors Historical Tourism Seminar

Colgate's Upstate Institute sponsors the Symposium on Cultural and Heritage Tourism from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, April 23 at the Mansion House in Oneida.  The symposium is designed to explore the best practices in the field of cultural and heritage tourism, as well as having conversations about how members of the tourism industry in Madison County might work together.

"The cultural heritage of Upstate New York is tremendously rich -- and needs to be placed on the national and international map of places to be visited and appreciated," said Ellen Kraly director of the Upstate Institute.  "We hope that this symposium will help all stakeholders in the region to draw connections among the significant sites in the county, and ultimately between the heritage of Madison County and the history of the United States."

The symposium will start with a keynote address given by New York State Sen. David Valesky, whose district includes Madison County.  Presentations will include an overview of some best practices in the field and begins with Defining the Field and Trends in Cultural Tourism by Lynn B. "Spike" Herzog, chair of the New York Cultural Heritage Tourism Network. 

Best Practices in Southern Washington County, will explore parallels to Madison County.  Christine Hoffer, director of tourism for Washington County, who has worked in the tourism and hospitality industry for 25 years will present her experiences bundling attractions. 

Peter Wisbey, past director of the Seward House in Auburn will present Collaborative Marketing Efforts from the Cultural Sites commission in the City of Auburn."  Lori Solomon-Duell the director of tourism development and marketing from the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor will present Creating Connections Across Different Levels of Government.

Next Steps will be a discussion coordinated by Dr. Joan Johnson, professor in the School of Business at Morrisville State College and Jim Walter, executive director of Madison County Tourism.

There is no cost to attend the symposium.  Lunch will be provided to those who pre-register for the event.  

The Oneida Mansion House is located at 170 Kenwood Avenue, Oneida.
