Tonight's HCS Concert Features Four Groups

Thu, May 05, 2011

Members of the HCS music program perform their annual spring concert tonight at 7 in the auditorium. Tonight's concert features performances by four groups: the Jazz Band, Middle School Band, the High School Band and a Marimba concertino featuring Allen Schult.

The Jazz Band has prepared two songs for their set list: Peg, a funky jazz-rock tune made famous by Steely Dan, and The Raider Returns, which merges the best qualities of samba and rock into a fantastic blend of music.

The Middle School Band has also been working hard on their repertoire which consists of Arabian Dances by Roland Barrett, Ammerland by Jacob de Haan, and Escape from the Deep by Brian Balmages.

Next up on tonight's playlist is Allen Schult, who will be performing his level six (the most challenging) NYSSMA solo on marimba accompanied by Kerry Koen on piano.

Finishing off the night will be the High School band, which has prepared four new pieces since their last performance in the fall. Their set list consists of the overture Antares by Richard Saucedo, Songs of Earth, Water, Fire, and Sky by Robert W. Smith, as well as Fantasy on a Japanese Folk Song and Arabesque, both of which were written by Samuel Hazo.

The is no admission for tonight's concert.
