Tennis: HCS is 5-3 as League Tournament Looms

HCS' varsity tennis team is now 5-3 following a 5-0 win over Ilion on Friday as the conferecne tournament appraoches Friday and saturday.

Coach Rob Poznar says the Emerald Knights are a balanced team featuring senior first singles player Josh Valencia (in photo), who has a Section III Class C-2 qualifying record of 3-2 after missing much of the early season with an illness. Junior Tom Bodnar has a C-2 record of 4-1 at second singles, including a 3-0 record last week in team wins over Morrisville-Eaton and Ilion and a loss to Poland. Senior Andrew Powrie is 4-0 at third singles.

Doubles has also been a strength for Hamilton, with senior David Schutt and sophomore John Valencia 5-1 at first doubles and sophomores Bailey O'Keeffe and Allen Schult a perfect 6-0 in their first year as a second doubles team.

The varsity team also includes seniors Gemma Wallace, who has a doubles win in three matches this season, and Derek Rebuck, who has played in one match, along with Jacob Smith and Cecelia Westre. Junior Tara Rebuck, sophomores Steven Gattuso, Kyle Lopp, Ann-Elise Noens, Willy Relyea, Dana Bowers, Emma Parish, and freshman Matt Van Heusen have played exhibition matches this season.

The Center State Conference league tournament will be played at the Colgate courts Friday and Saturday, while the Section III Class C-2 tournament is scheduled for May 24 at Hamilton College.
