Softball Team Beats A Bay; In Semi-Finals Wednesday

Every aspect of the HCS Lady Knights' game was working Saturday, and it helped them cruise past Aexandria Bay 6-2 and to the semi-finals of the Section III Class D playoffs.

Coach Bill Dowsland's team came up with timely runs with accurate bunts and slaps, but it also got a huge boost from a long ball.

The very young half of the best pitching duo in Central New York came through under playoff pressure, and she got solid backup in the field.

And, as they have all season, the Lady Emerald Knights capitalized on superior base running skills.

Now they face New York Mills Wednesday at a site and time to be announced. Mills advances to the semi-finals by sneaking past McGraw 4-3 Saturday.

Hamilton opened the scoring in the first and held a 1-0 lead until the bottom of the fifth.

With one out, shortstop Katie Weeks drew a walk. Then Rachel Holcomb laid down a perfect bunt advancing Weeks and putting herself on first. Jordan Peterson moved both of them in to score on towering triple that was just shy of a home run. Sam Martin laid down a perfect bunt, reaching first and Peterson dashed home and was safe on a head-first slide.

Jenna Whyatt then singled and Martin legged it to third. Whaytt took second on the next pitch. After pitcher Becca Rogers struck out, Whyatt and Martin scored on a wild pitch.

In A Bay's half of the sixth, things got a tad wobbly for the Lady Knights.

Seventh grade pitcher Rogers nailed the first batter in the head and then bobbled a ball hit hard right back to her. A wild pitch advanced both runners and a walk loaded the bases with just one out. Two runs scored on a single up the middle.

Rogers handled a grounder back to her and then struck out the next batter to get out of the inning.

That wrapped up the scoring for both squads.

Rogers ended the day with 11 strike-outs and allowed just one walk and three hits.

Hamilton's hitters:

  • Rachel Holcomb  2 for 3, scored 2 times
  • Jordan Peterson  1-3 including a two-run triple, scored 1 time
  • Sam Martin  2 for 3, scored 1 time with an RBI
  • Jenna Whyatt  2 for 3 scored 1 time.
