Soccer Documentary to Debut

To paraphrase Shakespeare's Henry IV: Uneasy lies the head that produced, wrote, shot and directed The Crown.

A week from now, Kenny MacBain's (in photo at left) documentary about the HCS boys soccer program titled The Crown, will debut in the school auditorium. MacBain's as anxious as he is excited. He is hoping for a full house and good reviews ... and some solid sales of the DVD and T-Shirts.

But, more than anything else, MacBain wants to do justice to the HCS soccer program that stood on shaky legs before growing into the powerhouse it is today, respected statewide.

Players, parents, coaches and fans will have the opportunity to relive the rise of the HCS soccer program on Friday at 7 p.m. The Crown will be shown in the HCS auditorium. MacBain will be selling DVDs of the film as well as T-Shirts. His goal is to raise money for the HCS Hall of Honor.

MacBain, an HCS grad studying at Onondaga Community College (OCC) and transferring to SUNY Oswego in the fall, spent every spare moment for the last year or so working on this film that recounts the history of the Emerald Knights boys soccer program. He read everything about the program since its inception and watched hour upon hour of video taken by parents and friends of players and the team.

MacBain, who was part of the HCS soccer tradition since meeting former Coach Russ Duvernoy in the seventh grade, recorded hours of interviews. He collected "B" roll around the community and nursed the raw material through the computer editing process. MacBain also sweated through some moments when much of what he worked for was lost.

Discussing the creation of The Crown, MacBain said he was hours into a marathon editing session one day at OCC. He was pushing himself, trying to meet every responsibility while birthing his film. That's when the lights flickered at OCC ... MacBain's editing blinked off the screen for good.

"I should have known better," said MacBain with half a smile. "It was Friday the 13th."

But, for the most part, MacBain talks like a young filmmaker who has been blessed. He said he was inspired by the showing of Class C, a movie about girls basketball shown at the first ever Hamilton Film Festival staged by the Slater Brothers last year. He hopes he can be part of the second annual event this August.

MacBain acknowledges many people who helped make possible The Crown. He said he could not have gotten any more help and support than what he got from Duvernoy and current HCS Coach Brian Latella. Both feature prominently in the film.

Latella is one of the few people who have seen the film in its entirety and is glowing in his praise for the product and the producer.

As for MacBain, he already is making notes on a project to work on when he transfers to SUNY Oswego.
