Slater Brothers Announce Dates for Film Festival

The Slater Brothers Entertainment's Hamilton Film Festival -- created by brothers Wade, Grant and Todd Slater, whose father, Terry Slater, was the head hockey coach at Colgate for 15 years -- is returning for its second year. It will be held Aug. 5-8. The host venue for Festival screenings is once again the Hamilton Theater.

The festival is now accepting submissions of films.

This year's festival will kick off with a VIP reception at Colgate for film festival organizers, film directors and producers, and other invited guests on Aug. 6 at 7 p.m. The first film will be screened at 8:30pm on Friday night following the reception. Events will continue throughout the weekend and include a festival closing event to take place at Hamilton Central School on Saturday night, as well as a closing night party.

New this year will include a special competition and screening for the best Central and Upstate New York short film selected for the festival. The addition of the Upstate New York Filmmakers Screening is to encourage local filmmakers to get involved with the festival and community.

In addition to the screening of films, the festival will include an awareness walk to benefit the Food Cupboard and a special screening of a film at Hamilton Central School will benefit the school's various educational and athletic departments.

"My brothers and I started this festival to give back to the area we grew up in," said Grant Slater. "We couldn't think of a better way to promote the festival and the arts of Central and Upstate New York than by encouraging interested filmmakers to get involved. Our company is aimed at putting on special events with a charitable focus. We thought, why not include the best local filmmakers in our festival by having a special screening dedicated to them. We hope to find some that will really resonate with the area and people of Upstate New York."

Todd Slater added, "Part of what we hope to accomplish with our Film Festival is to promote the arts and culture of the area we grew up in. It is not easy having your talents or film recognized in general, let alone if you are a filmmaker from Upstate New York. Regardless of the age, subject matter, or the price of the short film, we wanted to encourage budding filmmakers of Central New York to get involved with our festival. It's incredible what you can now create with a digital camera and a computer. Having a film included in the festival should encourage any film lover to get involved, pick up a camera, and create a short film that is fifteen minutes or less. This is why we wanted to particularly focus on screening a short film that was created by a resident or student of Up State New York."

"We wanted to bring a fun event back to where we grew up," said Wade Slater. "Hamilton is a special place. Hopefully we can bring some famous faces and some talented filmmakers back to Central New York for years to come. Anyone interested in entertainment and filmmaking should enjoy the experience and look to start putting his or her short film together now. As long as the filmmaker can put his or her film on a DVD that plays in the movie theater, we expect to have some great films sent our way."

The Film Festival local short competition is open to any filmmaker who is a Resident or Student of Madison, Herkimer, Chenango, Oneida, Oswego or Onondaga counties.

The first submissions cutoff is June 1. A late submission deadline will be extended to July 1 for certain circumstances. All submissions and processing fees should be sent to:
