Shape Distribution Starts This Weekend

Tue, Mar 30, 2010

Colgate artist in residence Allan McCollum's Shapes for Hamilton project reaches an important phase this weekend: the first of four distribution events. Town of Residents each have a unique shape awaiting them as part of this undertaking that explores the meaning of community.

Shape Distribution Starts This Weekend

A one-of-a-kind piece of art -- signed by the artist and made just for you -- awaits. No cost.

This weekend marks the beginning of the latest phase of a unique artistic undertaking, The Shapes For Hamilton, created by New York City artist Allan McCollum, who is an artist in residence at Colgate. On Saturday and Sunday, the unique shapes created for each resident of the Town of Hamilton, will be distributed.

This weekend the distributions are:

Saturday at Hamilton Central School, from10 am to 5 pm

Sunday at O'Connor Campus Center at Colgate, from  noon to5 pm

Next weekend's distributions are:

April 10 at the Poolville Community Center, from 10 am to 5 pm

April 11 at the Palace Theater, from 11 am - 5 pm

There is no fee involved.

Your last opportunity to register and discover your shape among the 6,500 on display at Colgate's Clifford Gallery is Wednesday.
You can register in person at the Clifford Gallery or online at www.shapesforhamilton.org

While you are not required to register to receive a shape organizers encourage residents to do so. By registering yourself and family members, you will each be assigned your own individual shape, linked to you and you alone.

If you were a registered voter in the Town of Hamilton, as of Dec. 31, 2009 you have already been assigned a shape. If not, you are can register if you currently reside in or just outside the Town of Hamilton.

Organizers say if you feel that Colgate or the Town or Village are important to your communal life, then they invite you to participate in this celebration of art and community.

The Shapes Project is a system developed by McCollum that can generate 31,000,000,000 unique two-dimensional "shapes" more than enough for every person on the planet.
