Sectionals: Softball Team Wins; Baseball Ends Season With Tough Loss

One advances and the other ends its play in the Section III tournament.

The HCS softball team beat Copenhagen 7-1 Thursday and now faces Alexamdria Bay at home Saturday at 1 p.m. But, the baseball team battled top-seeded New York Mills before giving up a lone run in the bottom of the seventh to end their season with a 2-1 loss.

Senior pitcher Samantha Martin continued her perfect season Thursday, striking out six and walking just two. Copenhagen tagged Martin for seven hits, most of which were inconsequential.

Hamilton piled on three runs in the second inning and that proved to be enough. The Lady Emerald Knights posted one in the third, two in the fifth and one more in the sixth to coast to win over 14th seed Copengahen.

As they have all season, Hamilton hitters had little problem with the opposing poitcher. They had 10 hits on the afternoon. Starring at the plate for Hamilton were:

  • Rachel Holcomb, 2 for 4, scored 2 times
  • Jordan Peterson, 1 RBI

  • Jenna Whyatt, 2 for 3 including a double, scored 1 time, 2 RBI's
  • Rebecca Rogers, 2 for 3, scored 1 time, 1 RBI.

Hamilton worked its way down to the third spot on the depth chart for catchers Thursday. Katherine Keever has filled in for the injured Sarah Whyatt all season. She had to be replaced by Kelby Watkins when she suffered an injury of her own.

Alex Bay advanced to Saturday's game be defeating Watertown IHC 5-2.

Coach Bill Dowsland's squad is now 18-2 on the year.

Meanwhile in Rome, Coach Joe LePage's squad was locked in a pitching battle with the tournament's number one seed, New York Mills.

Mills went up 1-0 in the fourth inning. Hamilton tied it in the fifth and appeared to ready to take the lead in the top of the seventh.Catcher Jack Sullivan hit a two-out double and pitcher Kinnon Nolan-Finkel reached base on a walk. But the rally failed on a strike out.

Mills pushed across one run in the seventh for the win.

Coach Joe Lepage said Nolan-Finkel pitched the game of his career Thursday. The junior lefty struck out four and walked just three. He gave up eight hits, but also got excellent backup in the field.

Lepage said Hamilton just couldn't get an offense mounted. Mills' Jeff Albright struck out 14.
