School District Thanks Sandra Carter

Sandra Carter, who has served on the HCS Board of Education for six years, was recognized for her service at tonight's regular meeting in the elementary school library.

Calling Carter "a sage for all of us at HCS", Superintendent Dr. Diana Bowers presented Carter with an inscribed crystal globe.

"I have received rich blessings from Hamilton Central," said Carter, who had been an elementary school teacher for HCS in the past. "I still have kids who were my first and third graders stop by the house as adults to say hello."

Molly Johnson will be filling Carter's spot on the board. She was elected in May when Carter decided not to run.

The board holds its annual reorganization meeting July 13 at 7 p.m.

Also at the meeting, Althea Brooks and Kelly Nagle were named to tenure track positions as elementary school teachers.

Also at the meeting:

  • Secondary School Principal Tom Lutsic said HCS will host a driver education program in conjunction with the Madison-Oneida BOCES during July. There are four openings -- filled on a first come, first served basis -- for the 48-hour class. Cost is $543.
  • The board set the 2010-2011 out-of-district tuition for students at $2,650, a 4 percent increase from the current year.
  • Bowers said the BOCES has agreed to offer a pilot career and technology program for eight 10th grade students next school year. She said several students made a well-thought-out presentation to her,  which she took to BOCES. During the course, normally for only juniors and seniors, the students will explore about 60 different career options.
  • The board renewed the contract of Bill Dowsland as athletic director.
  • And, the board approved students participating in the Model UN program to take a field trip to Montreal next school year. Students will be raising money for the trip.
