School Board Adopts Budget

The HCS Board of Education Wednesday Night adopted a proposed 2010-2011 budget that increases spending by about one half of one percent and includes a tax levy of just 3.18 percent. The spending plan that residents will vote on next month totals $11,335,607.

Superintendent Dr. Diana Bowers and Business Manager Matt Crumb explained the proposed budget and the process by which the final amount was reached. Crumb said the proposed budget that was unanimously adopted by the board went through 12 drafts.

"This really was a collaborative effort," said Crumb. "Everyone is making a sacrifice."

The budget includes no cuts to the arts program, which had been an issue of concern. It does not, however, include funding for junior varsity teams for any sports. That eliminated about $15,000 from the budget. However, Bowers said fundraising by the Hamilton Sports Boosters or $50,000 from Sen. David Valesky could be used to support those teams.

Bowers also reminded the board and the handful of people who attended the meeting that next year's budget will be much more difficult to create. She said federal bailout money used to close the gap when the state cut its share of aid will not be available.

The annual budget newsletter will be available to residents May 3 and there will be a public hearing on May 11. The vote on the budget and to fill two school board seats will be May 18. Polls are open noon to 8 p.m.
