Local Republicans Lean to the Right in Primary

Local results from Tuesday's primary voting show that Republicans in the town and village of Hamilton's are leaning to the right, throwing their support to two of the most conservative politicians running for office.

Like other Republicans in the state who voted Tuesday, those in the town and village overwhelmingly supported Carl "I'm Mad As Hell" Paladino over Rick Lazio by a 60 percent to 40 percent margin.

Doug Hoffman, last year's darling of conservative Republicans, did even better locally in the race to be the GOP's standard-bearer in the 23rd Congressional District race. Hoffman out-polled Matt Doheney 62 to 38 percent in the town and village of Hamilton. However, Hoffman lost to Dohney throughout the massive 23rd District.

Doheny will face incumbent Democrat Bill Owens in the general election in November. Tuesday's results in the town and village showed the results by district:

  1. Doheny 10 and Hoffman 28
  2. Doheny 17 and Hoffman 34
  3. Doheny 18 and Hoffman 24
  4. Dohney 23 and Hoffman 26

Doheny had 68 votes locally compared to Hoffman's 112.

The resuts were not to different in the GOP primary for governor.. Tuesday's results by district showed:

  1. Lazio 19 and Paladino 19
  2. Lazio 23 and Paladino 26
  3. Lazio 15 and Paladino 28
  4. Lazio 15 and Paladino 34.

Lazio ended up with 72 votes compared to Paladino's 107.

In the GOP primary race to face incumbent Democrat State Sen. Dave Valesky, Danny J. Liedka out-polled Andrew C. Russo narrowly. By district, the local vote totals were:

  1. Russo 20 and Liedka 19
  2. Russo 29 and Liedka 22
  3. Russo 14 and Liedka 28
  4. Russo 21 and Liedka 24

Liedka ended up with 93 votes, just nine more than Russo.

There were both Democrat and Republican primaries for the two-year unexpired term for the U.S. Senate the is is seat to which Kirsten E. Gillibrand was appointed after Hillary Clinton was named Secretary of State. Gillibrand easily handed Democrat challenger Gail Goode locally. Results by district locally were:

  1. Gillibrand 32 and Goode 4
  2. Gillibrand 53 and Goode 6
  3. Gillibrand 6 and Goode 2
  4. Gillibrand 17 and Goode 3.

Three Republicans -- Joseph J. DioGuardi, David Malpass and Bruce Blakeman -- ran for the opportunity to face Gillibrand in November. The local results, by district, were:

  1. Malpass 14, DioGuardi 17 and Blakeman 4
  2. Malpass 18, DioGuardi 19 and Blakeman 9
  3. Malpass 18, DioGuardi 21 and Blakeman 2
  4. Malpass 14, DioGuardi 23 and Blakeman 8

Locally, DioGuardi had 8 votes, Malpass had 64 and Blakeman had 23.
