Library, Bookstore Sponsor Writers, Illustrators Contest

The Hamilton Public Library and the Colgate Bookstore are sponsoring a young writers & illustrators contest from March 16 to April 16.

Called Chenango Valley Scribes, the contest is open to children in kindergarten through fifth grade.

The contest is designed to encourage creative expression through words and art, and to foster a love of writing in local elementary children.  A complete set of rules can be found on the official Chenango Valley Scribes Information Sheet & Entry Form, which will be available at the Hamilton Public Library at 13 Broad Street, the Colgate Bookstore, at area schools, and online at www.colgatebookstore.com/CVscribes.

Entries will be judged on originality, creative expression, storytelling and integration of text and artwork.  The contest judges are children's book authors and illustrators from Central New York, including:

Roger DeMuth - an artist, toy designer, author, and associate professor of illustration at Syracuse University.  He is the author and illustrator of the pop-up picture books Dinner for Eight and Please Don't Eat Me.

Barbara Ware Holmes - the author of novels for middle-grade readers and young adults, including Charlotte Cheetham, Master of Disaster, Letters to Julia, and Following Fake Man which was an Edgar Award nominee and a Maine Library Association Award winner.

London Ladd - an artist and illustrator whose work has appeared in magazine articles, and on album covers, book covers, and murals.  He is the illustrator of March On: The Day My Brother Martin Changed the World by Christine King Farris (younger sister of Martin Luther King Jr.) and of the upcoming picture-book biography of Oprah Winfrey: Oprah, The Little Speaker by Carole Boston Weatherford.

Winners of the contest will be announced at the Chenango Valley Scribes Awards Reception on Friday, May 14 at 6:30 p.m. at the Colgate Bookstore, to which the entire community is invited.
