Humphreys Abolition Painting to be Unveiled

A large new painting by Hamilton's Hugh Humphreys will be unveiled to the public at 7 p.m. May 20 at the Smithfield Community Center, and the artist will discuss went into the creation of the piece.

Refreshments will follow the program.

Measuring 40" x 80" and titled Come Join the Aboitionists, Humphreys'  painting depicts an imagined antisalvery meeting on the green in the Madison County hamlet of Petersboro in 1850.

Humphreys, a retired Madison County judge and lawyer, has long been involved with preserving and explaining the abolitionist history of this area. He wrote Balm in Gilead, a play about freedom seekers in Peterboro, and created the educational entertainment for the National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum inductions and commemorations since 2005.

In 2006 Humphreys donated his earlier Dreams of Madison County to the Madison County Historical Society as part of the county's bicentennial. He also researched the Fugitive Slave Law Convention in 1850 and the famous daguerreotype of the event.

Admission is $2.
