Sun, May 23, 2010

The Hamilton Central varsity tennis team finished fourth out of 12 teams at the Center State Conference tennis tournament last week in Utica. Hamilton finished with 23 points, behind champion Sauquoit, 31, Cooperstown, 27, and Mount Markham, 25.

The Knights were led by the second doubles team of sophomores Bailey O'Keeffe and Allen Schult, who made the doubles finals before falling to a Westmoreland team, 10-4. The doubles team of senior David Schutt and sophomore John Valencia, along with senior singles players Josh Valencia and Andrew Powrie, each lost in the semifinal round.

A week earlier, the team had finished its regular season with a 9-5 overall record and an 8-2 CSC Division II mark, good for second place behind Mount Markham.  The highlight of the week came with a double-header sweep of Westmoreland that clinched second in the league for Hamilton.

The team was led by Josh Valencia, who won all-star honors with an 8-6 record at first singles, and junior Tom Bodnar, another all-star with a 7-4 record at second singles.  Third singles player Powrie finished 9-3.  In doubles, the team of  Schutt and John Valencia was 8-5 at first, while O'Keeffe and Schult were 12-2 at second doubles.

The Knights will next compete in the Section Three Class C-2 tournament on Monday at Hamilton College in Clinton.  The players will vie for individual titles in each of five categories along with the overall team title.
