Updated: HCS Loses 2-1 in Softball Sectional Final

The HCS Lady Emerald Knights' outstanding softball season came to a disappointing halt Monday with a 2-1 loss to top seeded Stockbridge Valley in the Section III Class D finals.

It was about as evenly matched game as one could ask for. Each team got outstanding pitching and fielding. Neither team was able to mount much of an offensive threat.

In the end, it was an error that made the difference.

It looked as thought it could have been a wide-open ball game at the snug Cicero North Syracuse Softball Complex. Each team scored in the first inning:

  • Stockbridge on a bunt, a stolen base, a passed ball and a single before HCS' seventh grade pitcher Rebecca Rogers struck out the side.
  • Hamilton when Katie Weeks walked on four straight pitches, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice bunt by Jordan Peterson.

But, that was it until the final inning. Throughout the balance of the game, each team worked hard to scratch out runs but with no success.

Second baseman Peterson shut down a potential SVCS rally when she went high in the air and pulled down a sharp line drive that would have gone for at least a single if not two bases.

In the top of the seventh, Kaitlyn Askew made a diving catch on a shot to right field to save what easily could have been a double. But, Stockbridge managed to squeeze out a run on two walks and an error to go up 2-1.

Hamilton showed a spark of its own in its half of the seventh. With two outs, senior third baseman Samantha Martin slapped out ahard single and took second on an overthrow. The inning, the game and HCS' season ended when senior center fielder Jenna Whyatt struck out.

Coach Bill Dowsland praised his young squad after the game.

"Our defense was just awesome today," said Dowsland. Of Rogers he said, "She did everything we asked her to do. She certainly didn't look like a seventh grader out there.

"Our timing was just a little bit off at the plate."

Before the game, it was announced that Martin and Whyatt (in photo below) were named to the Section III Class D all-star team.

Hamilton winds up the year 20-3 overall.

Stockbridge plays Afton in the regionals Tuesday.
