EarthFest = Music + Earth Day

As they do so often, many of Hamilton's home-grown musicians are coming together next month for a good cause. This time it's to help raise awareness of the fragility of the environment, and they are doing it on Earth Day thanks to the efforts of a local architect and a self-described "hobbyist musician".

Bruce Ward is the organizing force behind EarthFest, a concert and consciousness-raising gathering to be held April 22 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Palace Theater. The event includes a long list of musicians contributing their talents and numerous environmentally-related organizations and businesses.

Ward said he had been to the young singer/songwriter contest at the Palace last fall, and it rekindled interest in his own music. That, collided with Ward's growing concern for the state of the environment.

Ward said he wrote a song about our need to take action before it's too late. He'll perform it at EarthFest.

The architect/singer/songwriter/activist will share the stage with a number of our more musically-inclined folks. Also at EarthFest (so far) are:

+ Chris Venditti

+ Putter Cox

+ Adger Williams

+ Suzanne Farrington

+ John Crespi

+ Steve Blais

+ Mason & Taylor McDowell

+ Lauren Mettler

+ Ed Vollmer

+ Reyna Stagnaro

In addition, in the upstairs at the back of the theater will be information tables for a variety of organizations, according to Ward. These include:

+ Southern Madison Heritage Trust

+ Rogers Environmental Center

+ A local anti-hydrofracking organization

+ Common Thread CSA

+  and others.

Earth Day 2010 is an especially importance observance, said Ward.

"Frankly, I'm scared of what is going to happen in my daughter's lifetime," said Ward, who also sings with the Syracuse Vocal Ensemble. His daughter is 14 years old. "It's scary what the world is going to be like in 50 years unless we do something about it."

Admission to EarthFest is $5 for anyone over 12 years old. Proceeds will benefit the Southern Madison Heritage Trust, the Natural Resources Defense Council and Al Gore's We Power.

Refreshments at the event will be sold by the Chenango Nursery School.
