Colgate Puts Payne House Back on the Market

Elisha Payne's house is for sale ... again.

While there is no for sale sign on the front lawn of the house at 35 Payne St., Colgate has put it back on the market. Asking price: $459,000.

The university purchased the house built in 1803 by the village's founding father about a year ago as a new residence for its president. Watson House, the traditional on-campus presidential residence, was considered to be in such poor condition as to be unsuitable for continued use.

Then, in an about-face, the university's Board of Trustees this spring approved funding to repair Watson House. Colgate's new president Jeffrey Herbst will move into Watson House when he arrives in July.

The listing for the house at 35 Payne St. on the website of Hamilton Village Real Estate reads:

"Hamilton's founder, Elisha Payne built a "country home" c. 1803. This 4,300 sf, two-story, five-bay Federal style residence with a center Palladian motif window has been lovingly updated. 5 BR, 3.5 baths. Large kitchen is the focal point, surrounded by family room and dining room. 15'x 25' living room with wood FP. Impressive Master BR Suite overlooks the backyard and features bay window, gas FP, spacious tile bath w/ steam room. Fenced and landscaped half-acre lawn includes a patio with hot tub and a fenced in-ground pool. Two-story carriage house with two-bay garage and exercise room. New concrete driveway, sidewalk and pool area stamped in a rich slate pattern with patina."
