Colgate Class of '14: Big, Diverse & Smart

So much for the bad economy putting a damper on enrollment at elite colleges ... including the one at 13 Oak Drive in the village.

Colgate's Class of 2014 -- the 858 first year students who will be arriving here in late August -- is the second largest class in the history of the university, said Anthony Adornato, Colgate's manager of media communications. (The largest incoming class was 1998 with 860 students.)

They arrive Aug. 26.

The 858 new Raiders coming to the Chenango Valley compares to 750 in last year's batch of first-years. They come from an applicant pool of 7,871, representing 50 states, the District of Columbia, and 121 countries; 2,596 were accepted.

"Our admission effort this year included initiatives aimed at attracting the strongest and most diverse applicant pool to Colgate, particularly in the context of an economic recession and declining demographics in many of the university’s traditional key markets," said Adornato. "The models we use to extend offers of admission are based on historical data, quality and demographic details of the applicant pool, and national trends. This year several segments of our pool behaved in an unpredictable — even unprecedented — manner."

And, this class is already worthy of note, and they haven't even arrived. Adornato said:

  • More than 90 percent of those in the Class of 2014 rank in the top fifth of their high school class,
  • The average GPA is 3.72 out of 4.0,
  • The SAT middle 50 percent is 1310-1490.
  • The class includes one of largest groups of enrolling Alumni Memorial Scholars in Colgate’s history. Alumni Memorial Scholars represent the very top of the applicant pool in terms of academic achievement and leadership.
  • Additionally, this is the most diverse class to enroll at Colgate, with 26.2% students of color.
  • Seventy-four international students will arrive at Colgate next month from 26 different countries. Adornato said "Colgate has long been committed to expanding the diversity of our community through the contributions of international students, and this year’s enrolling group (another record) is 72 percent larger than last year’s."
  • 103 of this year's newcomers are children or granbdchildren of Colgate alumni.
