Chapel to be Dark Saturday Night for Earth Hour

Don't be alarmed if you are in the village Saturday evening and you look toward the Colgate camps and don't see the gold dome of Memorial Chapel aglow.

It's dark for a reason.

The chapel, along with many world landmarks and people's private homes will go dark from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. local time Saturday in observance of Earth Hour, a huge campaign to raise awareness about global climate change. Also turning out the lights Saturday will, among other places, be:

    * Empire State Building

    * Brooklyn Bridge

    * Broadway Theater Marquees

    * Las Vegas Strip

    * United Nations Headquarters

John Pumilio, Colgate's sustainability coordinator, said Earth Hour has become the largest mass participation event ever. But, it's not just about turning out the lights on some high-profile buildings. Pumilio said individuals can also participate by turning out lights at home, in businesses and community buildings.

Pumilio said that Earth Hour 2009 attracted 80 million people. In addition, 318 cities participated in turning out lights.

"People will come together worldwide to promote one strong and united message," said Pumilio. "Become part of this fight and turn your lights off this Saturday."

In New York, turning of lights during Earth Hour are:

   * 91 schools

   * 41 universities

   * six cities

   * 13 organizations

   * 145 businesses.
