Bikes Going to Africa

Community Bikes and Youth Policy Institute, both of Hamilton, have teamed up to provide more than 110 new bikes to the Malawi Children's Village and 10 new bicycles to the Malaria Project of the North Blantyre Relief Project in Malawi, Africa. The bicycles will be used by health workers from the Malaria Project to conduct site visits in remote areas, and will be provided to orphans attending secondary school in the Village..

"Bicycles play a critical role in helping vulnerable children and families in Malawi," said Philip B. Uninsky, executive director of the non-profit Youth Policy Institute (right in photo). "We are extremely pleased to partner with Community Bikes. These bikes will serve a critical need, providing assistance to health workers to distribute medicines and mosquito nets and helping children in dire need to attend school."

Uninsky cited the key role of Colgate professor Dr. Harvey Sindima, who was instrumental in arranging for the purchase and delivery of the bikes. Dr. Sindima is the director of the North Blantyre Relief Project.

Community Bikes coordinator Chuck Fox (left in photo) said the placement of bicycles in Malawi was an important goal. "Philip and YPI have done a wonderful job of ensuring the project's success," said Fox. Community Bikes hopes to be able to expand the partnership to provide bicycles to the international community.

Community Bikes is a not for profit project that collects donated bicycles and places them, along with helmets and locks, with families in Madison County who can't afford them. Youth Policy Institute is a not for profit research, evaluation and policy center dedicated to improving the well-being of vulnerable youth and their families.
