HCS Inducts First Hall Honorees Six people who left their marks on HCS and members of the school community and the world beyond we inducted into the Halll of Honor Friday. In the inaugural class were (from left) Leo Kiley, Bruce Lamb, Carol Gallik Karlson, Katie Murphy, Barclay Potter and Bob Peach.
The induction ceremonies were part of the weekend-long celebration of the 50th anniversary of the opening of the school on West Kendrick.

New! Hamilton Man Injured Walking On Rte. 12N North Howard Snyder, 83, is in St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica, following an accident on Rte. 12B N Wednesday night. He was walking along the shoulder when he was struck from behind by a car. Snyder earlier had been in an accident, striking a car that had slowed for a third car. A family member said he is in intensive care at the hospital.

HCS Graduation Speeches Posted on Senior Scrapbook Page There were plenty of moving moments and even some unusual suggestions given by the speakers at HCS's 111th annual graduation this past Saturday. Our goal is to post all of the speeches by Superintendent Dr. Diana Bowers, Valedictorian Alex Thompson, Salutatorian Arianne Caprici, Class President Gennedy Julien and keynote speaker and member of the HCS Class of 2006, Chris White. White is performing at the Barge Friday night. More

July Fourth Parade has 50 Entries and More to Come; 85 Vendors on the Green Bonnie Cossitt, head wrangler for this weekend's July Fourth parade reports: "We did the initial line-up on the parade last night. At this time ,we have over fifty entries and they are still coming in. The main highlights of the parade are SUNY Morrisville's six-horse hitch and the Waterville High School marching band. This band placed second in the Sherburne Pageant of Bands and they will be performing at Disney World in July. At last count Patti Blocklin had 85 vendors signed, which is many more that last year." The parade steps off at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Can You Help Get Matt Charros Through/Around Chicago? Hamilton had the opportunity meet Matt Charros, the young artist walking across the US to raise money for and awareness of multiple sclerosis, when had stopped in town for a couple of days. Hamilton's Matt Malloy has stayed in touch with the other Matt on his journey and is hoping there might be someone out there who can help the traveler and his faithful dog Onyx negotiate their way through around Chicago. Formerly at Colgate, Weinberg to lead School for International Training in Vermont Adam Weinberg, who spent 11 years at Colgate in several capacities, has been named president and CEO of World Learning and SIT in Brattleboro, VT. Weinberg, has been World Learning’s provost since 2005 and executive vice president since 2006. He replaces Carol Bellamy. Read More

For the 111th Time HCS Turns Seniors into Alumni The Class of 2009 is now part of HCS history. The school district granted them diplomas in front of a packed auditorium Saturday afternoon. Musician and Class of 2002 graduate Chris White was the keynote speaker. Valedictorian Alex Thompson, Salutatorian Arianne Capirci and Class President Gennedy Julien also spoke. Local Price Chopper Included in Hamburger, Sirloin Recall The Price Chopper at Madison Marletplace on 12 B North at Airport Road is part of a recall of selected varieties of Price Chopper brand ground beef and beef loin bottom sirloin steaks. The store's website said the meat sold between May 7 and 16 and was recalled because of possible E. coli contamination. See the packaging details.

Hamilton's Latest Philanthropists are a Couple of Jackasses ... They Really Are! As staid a place as Hamilton can sometimes be, rule out July 22 as a day fitting into that category. That's when folks are invited to gather on a village green to meet a pair of miniature donkeys that Matt Malloy has enlisted to help raise money and awareness for several good causes. Malloy has also invited a friend of his to help kick things off: comedian Jake Johanhsen, who will perform at the Palace Theater that night. More

The Man Who Opened Woodstock Coming to Opera House Richie Havens, best known for his rendition of the Beatles' Here Comes the Sun, plays at the Earlville Opera House Theater Saturday, July 11 at 8 p.m. General admission tickets are $28 and $25 with an EOH membership. Palace Keeps Getting Busier; Shows Range from Beatles to a High School Reunion Jackie Robinson is coming to Hamilton. So are the Beatles. Actually, these are stage versions of their lives, but both will be performed -- with a long list of other shows -- at Hamilton's Palace Theater. More

HCS Lacrosse Seniors Honored Brian Rose's HCS lacrosse team is losing a big part of what made the team successful this year: six seniors. The team recently honored the six, including Alex Thompson, who scored a goal in the Exceptional Seniors game. More

Slater Brothers Stage Film Festival in Hamilton in August Todd, Grant & Wade Slater want to give something back to the community in which their family has lived and their father, Terry, was a legendary men's hockey coach at Colgate for many seasons. That gift will be a Hollywood-style film festival to be held in early August. More

HCS Principal Puts On Dancing (?) Shoes on Last Day of School If you drove thru the village this morning you may have seen a man wearing a top hat and sunglasses doing what can loosely be describe as the can-can. This was not a remake of Gypsy or local tryouts for the Radio City Music Hall Rockettes. Instead, it was HCS Elementary Principal Kevin Ellis making good on a promise to students. Colgate Part of Effort to Help Veterans Attend Colleges They Choose Starting this fall, qualified military veterans can attend Colgate University tuition-free, thanks to an agreement between the university and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The university will take part in the new Yellow Ribbon Program, a component of the Post-9/11 GI Bill, which makes earning a college degree more affordable for veterans. More

HCS Junior Blaine Holcomb Wins Radio Free Hamilton Pomp & Circumstance Challenge Heads up, Sir Edward Elgar, Blaine Holcomb is going to rock both your pomp and your circumstance. Holcomb. an HCS junior created his version of the song used at most graduations. It will be used as background on Radio Free's slide show following Saturday's HCS graduation. Holcomb plays in the local band The Juveniles and was a member of the state champion boy's soccer team. He won $100 for his efforts.

Colgate & Five Other Upstate Institutions Join Forces to Save Money It is said there is safety in numbers. Six Upstate institutions of higher education are going to see if there also are savings as well. Colgate and five other colleges and universities are working together to identify ways they can save money. See the story of the New York Six.

The President's Residence: New Colgate President to Live Downtown When Colgate settles on a new president, he or she will move into a new official residence located on Payne Street in the village. The university expects to close on the historic property -- the circa 1803 home of village founder Elisha Payne -- by the end of July. It is listed with Hamilton Village Real Estate for $459,000. Colgate officials say the property will remain on the tax rolls. Previous Colgate presidents have lived in Watson House on campus. Built in 1962, it is in need of numerous major repairs. In fact former President Rebecca Chopp did not live in Watson House for the last two years she served at Colgate.

Rotary/HBA Pancake Breakfast Draws a Crowd Sunday's Father's Day pancake breakfast and fly-in attracted almost 900 people to Hamilton's airport. That compares to some 350 at last year's Rotary event. The day featured food, chamber music, helicopter and airplane rides and a line-up of classic cars and a variety of vehicles. Proceeds benefit the Community Memorial Hospital's capital campaign. Catch Hamilton's Matt Malloy on TNT's HawthoRNe Tuesday Night Matt Malloy, the actor who calls Hamiton home much of the time, can be seen Tuesday night on HawthoRNe, the new medical drama on the TNT cable network. The series stars Jada Pinket Smith as adedicated nurse. HawthoRNe is the latest TV role for Malloy, an HCS graduate. His long list of credits include the TV hits Desperate Housewives, Bones, Lie To Me, Law & Order, The Unit, CSI, NCIS and Six Feet Under.

Emerald Knights Finish Second in State in Final Rankings Even though they did not make it to the state Class D finals, the HCS baseball team finished the 2009 season ranked second in the state by coaches and sportswriters. It was their highest ranking of the year. Ranked first was Arkport, which Hamilton lost to in the semi-finals 2-1.

Hamilton Goes to the Polls Tuesday to Elect Mayor & Two Trustees Polls will be open from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday as Hamilton voters elect a mayor and two trustees. Republican Robert Holcomb is challenging two Democrat incumbents, Jim Bona and Suzanne Collins, for two trustee seats. Incumbent Democrat Mayor Sue McVaugh is running unopposed. Bookstore Hosts Kids Party with Books by Laura Numeroff The Colgate Bookstore is hosting “If You Give a Kid a Cookie…” a children’s party featuring the best-selling books of Laura Numeroff on Wednesday, June 24 at 3 p.m. The free event is open to children ages 3-8, but is limited to the first 35 participants, so advance sign-up is recommended. Parents are encouraged to register their children in advance at www.colgatebookstore.com/cookie. The party will feature bookstore staff reading popular stories by best-selling author Laura Numeroff, followed by an interactive picture game, and a special Mouse Cookie song and dance time. Opera House Calls on Local Quilters for Exhibition The Earlville Opera House will hold a community quilt show "Steeped in Tradition" in the West Gallery from July 18 - Aug. 3. Local quilters are invited to exhibit their quilts for exhibition. Our "Steeped in Tradition" theme celebrates all traditions. Is there a story attached to your quilt? What tradition does it illustrate? Are you creating your own tradition? An entry form should accompany your quilt; a quilt exhibition form may be picked up at the EOH office or downloaded from the EOH website.

Emerald Knights Off to Binghamton and Class D Baseball Final Four Call it a road trip, a date with destiny or a long, long Saturday, but whatever it is the Emerald Knights baseball team got it started with a heartfelt and loud sendoff this morning. After a walk through the halls of the school lined with cheering classmates, Joe LePage and his team boarded a bus for Binghamton. They are scheduled to have a picnic this evening with the other teams in town for the finals and then play Arkport Saturday at 1 p.m. The champion ship game is at 4 p.m. Video of the sendoff from school

HCS to Give Baseball Team a Rousing Sendoff Friday The HCS baseball team, 20-4 for the year, gets a hearty sendoff Friday at 11:30 a.m. as the Knights head out to face Far West Region champ Arkport in a Class D state semifinal game at 1 p.m. Saturday at Union- Endicott High School’s Sylvester Field. Arkport, which is located on Rte. 17 in Steuben County near Hornell, is 19-2. Hamilton reached the final four by beating South Kortright in the regionals Tuesday. HCS Honors Athletes; Booster of the Year Named Kylie Martin is HCS's female athlete of the year for 2008-2009 and Tyler White is the top male athlete for that same period. They were honored at the all sports awards program Saturday at HCS. Also on Saturday, April Cady was chosen the Hamilton Sports Boosters' Booster of the Year. More

Former College Pharmacy Becoming New Coffee Shop Cafe 22, which is scheduled to open June 20 in the former College Pharmacy building (the old fire hall) at 22 Utica Street, will become the village's second coffee shop. Owned by Carolyn Gherardi and Craig DiBattista, the husband/wife team that operates the Parkside Cafe & Deli, the new cafe plans on serving coffee from Gimme Coffee in Ithaca. It will serve desserts and have an assortment of food "to go" from Parkside.

Bookstore Hosts Launch of Book on History of Eaton The Colgate Bookstore will host a book launch and reception for Mary Messere (a.k.a. “Back Street Mary”) to celebrate the publication of the new pictorial history book Eaton (Images of America) on Thursday, June 25 at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. The book includes archival photographs and stories of the Chenango Canal and its reservoirs, early turnpikes, the Morse family, Eaton’s famous inventors and writers, Eaton schools and other essential pieces of town history.

On His Walk Across Country, Artist Pays a Visit to Hamilton Matt Charros is on a road trip, and he literally is on the road. He is walking coast to coast to raise money for multiple sclerosis and hopes to build an art therapy studio when he gets back from his destination in Washington State. STOP NYRI Celebrates, but Warns Supporters of Continued Threats Between downpours and drizzles Saturday, supporters of STOP NYRI celebrated what its hopes is an end to efforts to build a 190-mile-long power line through Upstate New York. And, between thanking citizens and politicians, the groups warned that other, similar threats are on the horizon. More

Tax Exemptions -- Now Listed -- Put Squeeze on HCS When Belt is Already Tight "The only things certain in life," as the Benjamin Franklin quote goes, "Are death and taxes." What Old Ben didn't take into account was that while none of us escapes our mortal end, many -- especially in the HCS District -- don't necessarily pay all the property tax they might. For the first time, New York State is requiring school districts and municipalities to include lists of exempt properties as part of their budget packages. Hamilton recently adopted its budget and the list of 1,252 exemptions totals $315,578,500. Read how these exemptions cause budgetary heartburn for HCS. See the entire list of exemptions. Syracuse Symphony on Village Green July 9th; First Thursday Concert The village's annual Thursday night concert series on the village green will get a grand opening July 9 at 8 p.m. thanks to the Syracuse Symphony. Mayor Sue McVaugh announced the concert at Tuesday night's board of trustees meeting and thanked Murray Decock, Colgate; Patti Lockwood Blaise, Earlville Opera House; Ben Eberhardt, Colgate Inn and former Colgate music professor Dexter Morrill for helping make the concert possible.
